Treasure hunting: a shopping guide to Madrid

A hub of innovation and the epicentre of true luxury, Madrid has become one of Europe’s most exclusive shopping destinations. The city offers everything from concept stores – where fashion insiders gather inspiration and set new trends – to reinvented classics in the heart of the capital, as well as artisan routes celebrating Madrid’s thriving design scene. If you’re visiting the city, read this shopping guide, which features stops such as Galería Canalejas, WOW Concept, Las Rozas Village and legendary artisan destinations in places such as San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Let yourself be drawn into a shopping journey that goes beyond the conventional.

Shopping in Madrid goes far beyond simply buying products; it is a journey through creativity, luxury and tradition. The city is constantly reinventing itself as a hub of trends, with the retail sector transformed into an artistic and cultural experience. From the historic heart of the capital to towns across the Madrid region, every corner tells a different story of passion for design.

Some historic icons continue to shape the city’s shopping scene. Naturally, El Corte Inglés – a benchmark for fashion and accessories across generations – remains the perfect place to discover the best Spanish brands alongside a vast selection of international names, spanning fashion, sports, home décor and electronics, as well as gourmet spaces where visitors can enjoy outstanding gastronomy. If you’re visiting Madrid from outside the European Union, you can also collect Avios on your purchases at El Corte Inglés.

Two key areas of the capital define Madrid’s luxury shopping scene, with brands recognised around the world: the Salamanca district – with Calle Serrano as its golden mile alongside streets such as Ortega y Gasset – and Galería Canalejas, a 15,000sqm complex housed in the former Palacio de la Equitativa, an icon of Madrid architecture. Sharing its location with the Four Seasons Hotel between Calle Alcalá and Calle Sevilla, this shopping destination is one of the most exclusive in Spain, featuring boutiques from brands such as Hermès, Dior and Cartier, as well as Spain’s first stores by Stefano Ricci and Tom Ford, alongside a dedicated pop-up space for brands including Damiani and Panerai. It is also home to Beauty Gallery by ISOLÉE, a go-to destination for beauty lovers, offering premium skincare, makeup and niche fragrances.

In addition, the remarkable architecture of the Palacio de la Equitativa – which underwent a complete restoration in 2020 – means visitors can also take guided tours inside the complex. These tours offer the chance to discover 17,000 restored historic pieces, including the grand Art Deco stained-glass window that crowns the atrium of Galería Canalejas.

For those looking for the latest trends, WOW Concept has redefined the shopping experience in Madrid. With two flagship locations – the first on Gran Vía and the second on Calle Serrano – the project aims to merge the physical shopping experience with the very best of the digital world. The result is a concept store that brings together emerging brands and new trends, featuring labels such as Ganni, Cordera, Thinking Mu and Laagam, blending international styles with Spain’s remarkable creativity. Housed in the former Hotel Roma building and spanning 5,500sqm, WOW Concept also showcases the latest in home décor, travel, sports, perfumery and accessories.

But the shopping route extends far beyond Madrid city itself, reaching other towns across the wider region. Just 25 minutes from the centre lies Las Rozas Village, part of The Bicester Collection™, an Iberia Club partner that allows shoppers to collect Avios on their purchases. Las Rozas Village brings together more than 100 boutiques from leading Spanish and international fashion and lifestyle brands, including names as renowned as Prada, Dolce&Gabbana and Loewe. At this open-air shopping destination, visitors can enjoy discounts of up to 60 per cent off the original retail price throughout the year, in a setting inspired by a Mediterranean village and enhanced by personalised services such as personal and hands-free shopping.

Continuing the journey through craftsmanship and design, the route heads north of the region to discover artisan makers in San Lorenzo de El Escorial. This stop is essential for those searching for pieces with character and history. In its workshops and small local boutiques, visitors can find handcrafted glass, leather and ceramic creations that keep centuries-old techniques alive. Highlights include studios such as Casa Tenue, where Fernanda Algorta creates handmade beeswax candles, and charming spots such as Arte Relojero, a hidden gem for discovering some of Madrid’s finest vintage watches.

Antiques and collectors’ items also take centre stage at the Rastro de Navacerrada, held every Sunday in this mountain town in the Madrid region. Other villages, such as Torremocha de Jarama, also bring together artisan creators specialising in crafts such as ceramics, as well as hosting events such as the Torrearte Otro Madrid artisan fair each September.
